The Institute of Biotechnology is one of three institutions of the Scientific and Production Center “Armbiotechnology” founded in 2010 by the RA Government Decision. The Institute of Biotechnology is an immediate successor of CJSC “SRI Biotechnology”, which before the USSR decay was the head scientific organization (NITIA), coordinating large-scale researches on development and production of high-purity amino acids. Currently the Institute of Biotechnology, having preserved its main scientific potential, is the leading scientific-research center of the Republic in the field of biotechnology. The Institute has 87 employees including 57 research workers, 1 of them is a Full Member of NAS RA, 3 - Doctors of Sciences, 24 - Candidates of Sciences, 6 laboratory assistants, 24 technical staff.

MAIN FIELDS OF ACTIVITY

Production of new high-yield producers of amino acids and biologically active compounds (BAC);
study of cultivation conditions and those for increase of biosynthetic activity of amino acid producers;
production and construction of microbial strains, particularly, of enzyme producers and production of BAC on their basis;
development of biotransformational methods for production of optically active L- and D-amino acids;
asymmetric synthesis of non-protein amino acids and peptides involving small-scale production of L- and D-amino acids;
asymmetric synthesis of isotope-labeled amino acids for Positron Emission Tomography (PET);
development of technologies for production of new bacterial insecticides, plant growth stimulators and biofertilizers.
Development of new highly effective methods and techniques for:
  • simultaneous measurement and prediction of nanoparametres of numerous processes occurring in cells (microorganisms, cells of plants, mammals and insects) in suspension cultures,
    control of processes occurring in single cells of suspension culture to increase the productivity of biotechnological processes, as well as of processes using the strain-producers with low productivity. (see «Nanobiotechnological project»).

MAIN RESULTS


More than 20 technological regulations for production of L-amino acids have been developed, particularly, new high-yield producing strains of L-proline, L-valine, L-alanine, L-ornithine, L-arginine, and L-histidine were obtained by genetic-selective and gene-engineering methods;
biotechnological methods for production of D-amino acids, particularly, D-alanine, D-aspartic acid, D-proline, D-methionine, D-leucine were developed;
laboratory technologies for production of more than 80 new non-protein R- and S- α-amino acids by asymmetric synthesis were developed;
technologies for production of enzymatic preparations (pepsin, amylase, glucoamylase) for food industry were developed;
technologies for isolation of high quality fatty and volatile oils for medical and cosmetic purposes were developed;
technologies for new insecticidal preparations and biofertilizers production were developed;
methods for production of bioinhibitors against agents of the most dangerous infections and infectious diseases were developed.


INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

The Institute successfully collaborates with numerous organizations of the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, European Union, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine. This collaboration resulted in successful realization of joint scientific research grants and projects (INCO-COPERNICUS, ISTC, INTAS, CRDF, ANSEF, EURASIA Foundation and NATO Program for Security through Science Grants, etc.). For contribution in the development of biotechnology and achievements in scientific collaboration the Institute and, particularly, director of the Institute Academician of NAS RA, Prof. A. S. Saghyan were awarded EUROPEAN “DESCARTES PRIZE” (2001), “AWARD OF FRIENDSHIP” of the Government of the Chinese People's Republic (2002), «Golden Star» Prize of the International Business Initiative Directions Organization in the category Quality and Leadership, (“INTERNATIONAL QUALITY STAR AWARD” ) (2003), RA PRESIDENT’S PRIZE (2004), “TIEN-SHAN” Prize of the Government of Xinjiang province (2002, 2005), RA Prime-Minister’s Diploma (2006).
