SCIENTIFIC DIVISIONS

LABORATORY OF NITROGEN-FIXING MICROORGANISMS
LABORATORY OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC MICROORGANISMS
LABORATORY OF LACTIC ACID BACTERIA AND YEASTS
LABORATORY OF GEOMICROBIOLOGY
LABORATORY OF BACTERIA BIOCHEMISTRY

MAIN FIELDS OF ACTIVITY

Study of biodiversity, systematics, ecology, morphological, physiological, biochemical and genetic peculiarities of microorganisms, as well as production of biologically active compounds.
Extraction of metals including precious from ores of different nature, concentrates, dumps and wastes by microbiological leaching, as well as development of biohydrometallurgical methods for various metals production.

MAIN RESULTS

Biological peculiarities of nitrogen-fixing, chemolithotrophic, photosynthetic, lactic acid bacteria, as well as those of fungi and yeast were studied. Collections of the stated microorganisms were created.
Methods for extraction of metals including precious were developed.
Lactic acid therapeutic diet drugs (Narine, etc.) were created.
Fertilizers based on nitrogen-fixing microorganisms were created.
Strains of phototrophic bacteria perspective for production of physiologically active compounds – licopin, carotenoids and others were isolated.
Methods for production of ethanol and citric acid from inulin-containing raw-material were developed.
Properties of amylase, aminoacylase, pullulanase, invertase, glucoisomerase, inulinase of microorganisms relating to various groups, as well as the possibilities of their use to produce physiologically active compounds were studied.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

The Institute of Microbiology successfully collaborates with numerous scientific research Institutes of USA, Japan, European Union, Russia and other CIS countries. This collaboration led to successful accomplishment of the following research grants ISTC, CRDF, INCO-COPERNICUS.
