MICROBIAL DEPOSITORY CENTER

 

Microbial Depository Center  (MDC) was founded in 1993. It was established by Academician of NAS RA, Professor, DSc in Biology, Honored Scientist Evrik Afrikian. The main scientific activities are the study of microbial biodiversity, obtaining of new prospective microbes of scientific and production significance and their application.

 

 

RESEARCH MAIN DIRECTIONS

  • A national collection with its database of non-infectious microbial cultures of scientific and production significance is presented in the Microbial Depository Center (MDC).
  • About 12.000 strains of bacteria, fungi, yeasts and actinomycetes are maintained in the MDC.
  • MDC research activities encompass complex study, isolation and classification of new microbes, development of long-term maintenance methods for their vitality and important industrial features, as well as suggestions for practical use.

 

MAIN INVESTIGATION RESULTS

  • Most of the cultures maintained at the MDC are represented by unique strains isolated, classified and studied in Armenia, which reflect the biological and climatic diversity of the South Caucasian region. The strains are cultivated, maintained viable, under mineral oil and in a lyophilized state.
  • A large collection of entomopathogenic bacilli, isolated from various ecological zones and essential for the production of effective pesticides, transgenic plants and other genetic studies, has been created and studied in detail. For the production of fodder, food and other products a large collection of fermentable bacteria, including strains of various yeasts, lactic acid bacteria and other bacteria is available.
  • Particular attention is paid to the study of extremophilic bacilli, which have significant biotechnological potential and practical importance for microbiological transformation and production of biologically active substances. The enzymatic properties of the strains for target use of biocatalytic reactions and the creation of a database are described in detail.
  • The collection of fungi isolated from space technology, degraded lignocellulose and other natural substrates comprises more than 1.000 strains.
  • MDC research activities encompass complex study, isolation and classification of new microbes, development of long-term maintenance methods for their vitality and important industrial features, as well as introduction of new aspects for practical use.

 

MAIN OBJECTIVES AND TASKS

The main goals and objectives of the MDC are to maintain the microbial depository of scientific and production significance, as well as to provide a patenting and licensing service in the field of microbiology.
